Notater - Notes for OLAF BERTRAM FRISCH:
Olaf left home in Norway at the age of 11 or 12 and went to sea at 13 as a cabin boy on a sailing ship. He did not want to enter the family jewelry business. Olaf's family were the official jewelers to the King of Norway.
One of Olaf's ships, the Tidal Wave, may have been a racer, as he was a crew member in New York to Bermuda races.
Olaf and Mary Catherine originally came to Washington State from New York with a party of settlers, about nine families and four bachelors. They travelled by ship in the spring of 1879 to the Panama Isthmus, crossed overland by railway, then by ship to Puget Sound. The men settled on a claim in the Black Hills, below Capitol Peak, west of Olympia (Sherman Valley?). Each settler stacked a claim of 160 acres of prime Douglas Fir, had to reside on claim for 6 months for ownership. All did so, but sold out to a local logging partnership for $1.50 per acre.
The women and children were installed in a camp at the fair grounds site in the Carlyon Addition, Olympia. Marie Christine was born here.
The men were snowbound that first winter. Olaf made a pair of skis and travelled 13 miles cross-country to Mud Bay and then to Olympia to pick up supplies and bring them back to the other men.
After that winter most of them returned to the East Coast. None of them were experienced, ( a lawyer and a concert violinist), enough to become settlers.They had a rough time.
The party known as the "Newell Party" was sponsored by Gov.......... Newell, NJ. His daughter was wife of Capt. Jordan, the ship's captain, who was a friend of Jake's father while in the East. ( Dr. Newell was a physician in Olympia?)
Olaf worked in the State Surveyor's Office for 1 - 2 years in early 1880's. He quit because of health and started a celery and truck garden below the 17th St. home, where the Freeway and and Henderson Bald. are now located. He was also custodian of the Odd Fellows Hall.
